Don Det
In the south of Laos you have a beautiful area that is called 4000 islands. Don Det is one of the bigger islands where you can stay and enjoy the peacefulness of the small islands where almost no car can be found and you can walk from one side to the other. Relax and enjoy are the key words for Don Det.
What to do on Don Det?
Don Det is a small island and is part of the 4000 islands in the south of Laos, besides Don Det you can visit many other islands. On Don Det there is a relaxed vibe and the best way to get around is by bike. So rent a bike for the day and visit the small temple in the middle of the island, go to Mama Leuah restaurant for food, cross the bridge to Don Khon and discover this island as well, visit the Li Phi waterfalls and be careful for all the animals along the way. You can also do a day tour to spot the very rare sweat water dolphins, who swim in the Mekong river and there are only 92 left of them. For the people that like to be more active, rent a kayak and discover the river and the different islands by yourself. The last thing you can do on Don Det is relax at the beach and enjoy some easy time.

Food favorites
Because I only stayed one day I haven't visit many places but I have two I really liked and you should definitely try out. The first one is Mama Leuah restaurant with amazing local and western food for great prices. You can sit at the terrace and have a nice view over the river. It is a bit in the middle of nowhere but you should definitely try it out!
The second one is Kamphong riverside restaurant which is perfect for dinner and watching stunning sunsets. Also for breakfast in the morning this place is perfect and if you have to catch the boat they also have takeaway for you.
Dalom guesthouse
On Don Det there aren't any hostels but you can choose between many guesthouses. We chose Dalom Guesthouse because it was close to the ferry, had a great price and had good reviews. It is a nice place with a few private rooms and you can rent a bike there to discover the islands. The price per night is 7 euros and the owners are willing to help you with everything. From tips on and around the island to booking return tickets for you.
